Description for GARLAND
Hard Red Winter Wheat
With continued
evaluation of the cultivar Garland, The Utah Agricultural Experiment Station
believes that it is necessary to revise the variety description to accurately
reflect the cultivar genetics. The
Garland variety description is now revised to reflect that Garland may contain
up to 10 white kernels per pound and height variation exists in the cultivar to
the extent that up to 5% of the Garland plants may have heads up to 6Ó taller
than the rest of the plants.
Garland has the
pedigree :

and was released in the fall of 1993.
Garland is an awned,
tan-chaffed, semi-dwarf hard red winter wheat released for production under
irrigation. It is 3 days later
than Stephens and 12 cm shorter than Nugaines, typically growing to a height of
77 cm however up to 5% of the plants in the cultivar may may have heads up
to 13cm taller. Hairs on the first leaf sheath are
sparse and the head is dense and oblong with a 9 cm length and 14 mm
width. At maturity the glumes are
long and wide with a wanting shoulder and an acuminate beak. The seed is ovate with a rounded cheek
and a brush that is medium length and not collared. The phenol reaction in the seed is brown and the seeds are
red except for up to 3 10 white seeds per pound.
Garland is protected
under the Plant variety Protection Act, Public Law 91-577, and Title V of the
Federal Seed Act. Breeder seed
will be maintained by the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station, Logan, Utah. Foundation seed will be available from
the Utah Crop Improvement Association, Logan, Utah.
